As we fly through August, the lakes are starting to settle down, and honestly, this is one of my favorite times of year at Okoboji.

I couldn’t sleep this morning, so I decided to grab my camera and head out. I’m always amazed at how quickly things seem to wake up around the lake in the early morning. The quiet water, soft light, and familiar sights make it hard to stay home.

And yes, the gulls are moving in!

There’s just something special about being out with a camera while the rest of the day is still waking up. These late summer mornings at Okoboji are a reminder of why I love photographing this place.
